Non-invasive Assessment of 3D Load Distribution over the Femoral Articular Cartilage after Medial Menisectomy - Experimental T2 Mapping Study in Porcine Knee -

چکیده
INTRODUCTION The meniscus plays an important role in the biomechanical knee function. Previous experimental and clinical studies showed that menicectomy results in significant increase of local load transmission and leads to degeneration of the articular cartilage in the knee joint 1-3) . However, there has been no methods which allows three-dimensional (3D) assessment of load distribution in the knee articular cartilage after menicectomy or meniscus injuries without invasiveness. Recent studies of MR imaging showed cartilage T2 mapping is closely related with cartilage matrix and water content. Responsiveness of articular cartilage to compressive loading by T2 may indicate pressure distribution on the cartilage, via evaluation of dynamic changes in the collagenous architecture or water influx or efflux through cartilage 4) . The purpose of this study is to assess influence of medial menisectomy on 3D T2 mapping of the femoral cartilage in the porcine knee joint, using a custom-made non-metallic pressure device which allowed MR imaging under variable loading magnitudes or knee alignments.

Loading and knee alignment have significant influence on cartilage MRI T2 in porcine knee joints.
OBJECTIVE Physiological magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) under loading or knee malalignment conditions has not been thoroughly investigated. We assessed the influence of static loading and knee alignment on T2 (transverse relaxation time) mapping of the knee femoral cartilage of porcine knee joints using a non-metallic pressure device. METHODS Ten porcine knee joints were harvested en bloc wi...

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to clarify the appearance of the reparative tissue on the articular surface and to analyse the properties of the reparative tissue after hemicallotasis osteotomy (HCO) using MRI T1ρ and T2 mapping. METHODS Coronal T1ρ and T2 mapping and three-dimensional gradient-echo images were obtained from 20 subjects with medial knee osteoarthritis. We set the reg...
متن کاملArticular cartilage of the knee 3 years after ACL reconstruction
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE T1ρ or T2 relaxation imaging has been increasingly used to evaluate the cartilage of the knee. We investigated the cartilage of ACL-reconstructed knees 3 years after surgery using T2 relaxation times. PATIENTS AND METHODS 10 patients with a clinically successful unilateral ACL reconstruction were examined 3 years after surgery. Multiple-TE fast-spin echo sagittal images...
متن کاملRespective interest of T2 mapping and diffusion tensor imaging in assessing porcine knee cartilage with MR at 3 Teslas.
Non-invasive quantitative assessment of articular cartilage integrity is essential for early detection and evaluation of osteoarthritis (OA) and for the follow-up of stem-cell-driven cartilage engineering. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of exploiting diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) on porcine knee joints with a clinical magnetic resonance (MR) scanner to extract micro-structural ...
متن کاملEvaluation of focal cartilage lesions of the knee using MRI T2 mapping and delayed Gadolinium Enhanced MRI of Cartilage (dGEMRIC)
BACKGROUND Assessment of degenerative changes of the cartilage is important in knee cartilage repair surgery. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) T2 mapping and delayed Gadolinium Enhanced MRI of Cartilage (dGEMRIC) are able to detect early degenerative changes. The hypothesis of the study was that cartilage surrounding a focal cartilage lesion in the knee does not possess degenerative changes. ...
